Mobility2Grid at the PartWiss 2025: The Role of Citizen Assemblies in the Mobility Transition

How can citizens be actively involved in shaping the mobility transition? This question was addressed by the Mobility2Grid research campus in May 2025 through a citizen assembly (“Planungszelle”), in which 50 randomly selected Berlin residents took part. The assembly, consisting of discussion rounds and expert talks, focussed the future of public mobility services. It aimed at bringing innovative forms of public participation into strategic research on the mobility transition.
The combination of scenario techniques and elements of a citizen assembly represented an innovative methodology: citizens and researchers jointly developed complex future scenarios, the results of which will be directly incorporated into the mobility projections developed by the Mobility2Grid research campus. This will result not only in the enhancement of the quality of these projections, but will also strengthen the societal acceptance of new mobility concepts.
The project team will present results and experiences of this process at the PartWiss Conference 2025 in November, which aims to promote the development of expertise and sustainable networks as well as the exchange of knowledge in the field of participation in research. Researchers from the Mobility2Grid campus will share their insights in a lightning talk titled “The Role of Citizen Assemblies in Shaping the Mobility Transition: Insights from the Mobility2Grid Project at the EUREF Campus Berlin.”
We congratulate the team on being accepted into the conference program and look forward to the discussions and impulses that will emerge from this contribution.
