M2G Conference: Multifunctional Hubs as Drivers of Sustainable Urban Transformation – Strategies at the Intersection of Mobility, Energy, and Logistics

31th October 2025, 09:00 to 15:00 at the Green Garage, EUREF-Campus 15a Berlin

Attendance

The event will take place on the EUREF-Campus. You can take part in this event on site. Please register in advance. The registration form, our program and further information can be found further down on this page.

Introduction

Multifunctional hubs open up new pathways for sustainable urban and transport development.
By spatially combining mobility services, energy supply, and logistics, they create places that use space efficiently and foster exchange. Human mobility needs, commercial activities, and logistics processes meet renewable energy and smart grids here — making neighborhoods more livable and climate-friendly.

At multifunctional hubs, buses, (shared) bicycles, (shared) cars, and delivery vehicles are charged; parcels for the last mile are consolidated; and sharing services are interconnected. In this way, central nodes are created that help reduce emissions, ease traffic flows, and open up new potential for local value creation and community development.

Initial (M2G) research findings show that these hubs can serve as drivers of sustainable urban development. They promote the shared use of infrastructure, reduce empty trips, facilitate the shift to sustainable modes of transport, and support renewable energy use in urban areas. At the same time, they place high demands on planning, acceptance, and governance — from integrating into existing neighborhoods to fostering collaboration among municipalities, businesses, and civil society.

Within the M2G Conference, we aim to bring these stakeholders together and look ahead:
How can we spatially and organizationally align the diverse requirements of different stakeholders to create the desired synergies? Which strategies are most promising for connecting mobility, energy, and logistics at their interfaces? And which pilot projects can pave the way?

In the first part of the event, various stakeholders will share their perspectives on the requirements and interests related to multifunctional hubs. Afterwards, we will discuss concrete implementation pathways in a workshop. The program will conclude with a guided tour of the EUREF Campus Berlin and a presentation of our zeeMobase as a practical example of a hub linked with a micro smart grid.
