In this ses­si­on, Die­go Fadran­ski, Head of the “Auto­ma­ted Dri­ving and Char­ging” unit at Mobility2Grid, offers valuable insights into the future role of elec­tric vehic­les in decen­tra­li­zed and resi­li­ent ener­gy systems.

As rene­wa­ble ener­gy sources con­ti­nue to expand and public and indi­vi­du­al mobi­li­ty beco­mes incre­asing­ly elec­tri­fied, new chal­lenges ari­se for the sta­bi­li­ty of power grids. One pro­mi­sing solu­ti­on is bidi­rec­tion­al char­ging — a tech­no­lo­gy that allows elec­tric vehic­les not only to con­su­me elec­tri­ci­ty, but also to feed ener­gy back into the grid when needed.

The web­i­nar pres­ents cur­rent rese­arch at Mobility2Grid on how elec­tric vehic­le bat­te­ries can sta­bi­li­ze power grids and pro­vi­de emer­gen­cy back­up power for cri­ti­cal infra­struc­tu­re. Along­side the tech­no­lo­gi­cal poten­ti­al of vehic­le-to-grid solu­ti­ons, the ses­si­on will also address the regu­la­to­ry, eco­no­mic, and tech­ni­cal chal­lenges that still need to be overcome.

Whe­re the future takes shape: Germany’s engi­ne of inno­va­ti­on show­ca­ses its­elf at re:publica 2026

From cli­ma­te-neu­tral indus­try to new mobi­li­ty solu­ti­ons and glo­bal health rese­arch: Germany’s inno­va­ti­on clus­ters and rese­arch cam­pu­ses are sha­ping the future of our socie­ty. At re:publica 2026, the clus­ter and cam­pus initia­ti­ves of the Fede­ral Minis­try of Rese­arch, Tech­no­lo­gy, and Space (BMFTR) will show­ca­se their suc­cess sto­ries tog­e­ther for the first time.

At Mobility2Grid, we’re deve­lo­ping tech­no­lo­gies for elec­tric bus fleets and bidi­rec­tion­al char­ging that are alre­a­dy being used in Berlin’s trans­por­ta­ti­on infra­struc­tu­re today. But we’re not alo­ne in Germany’s inno­va­ti­on engi­ne room. In Frei­burg, nano­diag BW is deve­lo­ping dia­gno­stic methods capa­ble of ana­ly­zing indi­vi­du­al molecules—enabling the detec­tion of dise­a­ses like can­cer, Alzheimer’s, or dia­be­tes befo­re sym­ptoms appear. In the Rhi­ne­land, Sup­plHy­In­no is crea­ting con­cre­te tech­no­lo­gies for a cli­ma­te-neu­tral indus­try, such as hydro­gen bur­ners that are alre­a­dy in indus­tri­al use. And in the bioRN Life Sci­ence Clus­ter, an inter­na­tio­nal rese­arch hub is emer­ging that bridges the trans­la­ti­on gap and, with initia­ti­ves like XFem Labs, is pro­vi­ding new momen­tum in women’s health.

The­se rese­arch pro­jects are not iso­la­ted cases, but rather a reflec­tion of a broa­der sys­tem. At re:publica 2026, Germany’s inno­va­ti­on clus­ters and rese­arch cam­pu­ses will show­ca­se their suc­cess sto­ries, becau­se while the­re is much dis­cus­sion about Germany’s capa­ci­ty for inno­va­ti­on, it has long been taking place within the country’s inno­va­ti­on clus­ters and rese­arch campuses.
We are the work­shops of chan­ge, becau­se this is whe­re scientific excel­lence is tur­ned into con­cre­te appli­ca­ti­ons. We con­nect disci­pli­nes, pool exper­ti­se, and crea­te the con­di­ti­ons for ide­as to beco­me solutions.

Tog­e­ther at re:publica 2026

From May 18 to 20, 2026, 22 clus­ter and cam­pus initia­ti­ves of the Fede­ral Minis­try of Rese­arch, Tech­no­lo­gy, and Space (BMFTR) will pre­sent them­sel­ves tog­e­ther for the first time at re:publica in Ber­lin under the the­me “Germany’s Inno­va­ti­on Engi­ne Room.”
The goal: to demons­tra­te how inno­va­ti­on actual­ly takes shape in Germany—from new medi­ca­ti­ons and ener­gy-effi­ci­ent AI to hydro­gen tech­no­lo­gies and new mobi­li­ty concepts.

We invi­te you to visit our joint booth in Hall 3 of STA­TI­ON Ber­lin. You’ll gain insights into spe­ci­fic pro­jects and suc­cess sto­ries from across Ger­ma­ny. The booth will be com­ple­men­ted by a panel dis­cus­sion on May 20 from 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on the re:publica main stage, whe­re repre­sen­ta­ti­ves from poli­tics and clus­ters will pre­sent Ger­ma­ny as an inno­va­ti­on hub through a net­work­ed sys­tem. Rethin­king the role of muni­ci­pal uti­li­ties: The path to beco­ming a future-rea­dy ener­gy ser­vice provider

Laun­ched in Decem­ber, our new web­i­nar series Grid­Talks is now ente­ring its second round. The series fea­tures expert dis­cus­sions on the most pres­sing chal­lenges and deve­lo­p­ments sha­ping the ener­gy and mobi­li­ty tran­si­ti­on, from smart ener­gy manage­ment and emer­ging sto­rage tech­no­lo­gies to con­cepts for actively invol­ving citi­zens in the mobi­li­ty transition.

On Febru­ary 20, we will host the next web­i­nar in the series, fea­turing Char­lot­te Rit­ter, Inno­va­ti­on & Ven­ture Hub Lead at inno2grid. She will share insights into new business models for muni­ci­pal uti­li­ties and ener­gy sup­p­ly com­pa­nies (EVUs) in today’s rapidly evol­ving ener­gy land­scape. The ses­si­on will explo­re why tra­di­tio­nal com­mo­di­ty-based business models are incre­asing­ly rea­ching their limits and how the gro­wing demand for ener­gy ser­vices is crea­ting new eco­no­mic oppor­tu­ni­ties. Char­lot­te Rit­ter will also high­light suc­cessful decen­tra­li­zed and digi­tal business models, the role of ener­gy manage­ment sys­tems, and the key suc­cess fac­tors for deve­lo­p­ment, mar­ket ent­ry, and scaling.

Dra­wing on real-world examp­les, the web­i­nar will explo­re how inno­va­ti­ve business models can be sys­te­ma­ti­cal­ly deve­lo­ped, tes­ted, and trans­la­ted into ope­ra­tio­nal prac­ti­ce, hel­ping muni­ci­pal uti­li­ties remain com­pe­ti­ti­ve and future-rea­dy in the long term.

M2G Con­fe­rence 2025, Octo­ber 31: Mul­ti­func­tion­al Mobi­li­ty Hubs as Dri­vers of Sus­tainable Urban Development

M2G Sym­po­si­um Rio 2025: Bus Elec­tri­fi­ca­ti­on in Bra­zil and Germany

From 10 to 11 Sep­tem­ber 2025, the Tech­ni­cal Uni­ver­si­ty of Ber­lin (TU Ber­lin) and the Fede­ral Uni­ver­si­ty of Rio de Janei­ro (UFRJ) joint­ly hos­ted a two-day public sym­po­si­um focu­sing on the inte­gra­ti­on of elec­tric bus sys­tems and digi­ta­li­zed depots. The event pro­vi­ded a plat­form to dis­cuss the tran­si­ti­on pro­cess, impacts, and risks asso­cia­ted with bus and depot elec­tri­fi­ca­ti­on in both Bra­zil and Germany.

Dra­wing on more than a deca­de of rese­arch, TU Ber­lin pre­sen­ted insights from the Mobility2Grid (M2G) rese­arch cam­pus in Ber­lin, inclu­ding pro­jects on fleet elec­tri­fi­ca­ti­on with BVG, auto­ma­ted char­ging tech­no­lo­gy, and digi­tal depot manage­ment. A par­ti­cu­lar focus was pla­ced on the spa­ti­al design of depots and mobi­li­ty hubs, which play a gro­wing role in the broa­der ener­gy and trans­port transition.

UFRJ con­tri­bu­ted per­spec­ti­ves on the spe­ci­fic chal­lenges and oppor­tu­ni­ties of bus elec­tri­fi­ca­ti­on in Bra­zil, empha­si­zing the metro­po­li­tan con­text of Rio de Janei­ro. The sym­po­si­um aimed to deve­lop con­text-sen­si­ti­ve solu­ti­ons for Bra­zil while estab­li­shing the foun­da­ti­on for a long-term rese­arch col­la­bo­ra­ti­on bet­ween both institutions.

Ser­ving as a vital forum for exch­an­ge bet­ween aca­de­mia, poli­cy, and indus­try, the sym­po­si­um brought tog­e­ther repre­sen­ta­ti­ves from fede­ral, sta­te, and muni­ci­pal govern­ments, deve­lo­p­ment banks, vehic­le manu­fac­tu­r­ers, and ener­gy providers.

Dis­cus­sions addres­sed topics such as char­ging infra­struc­tu­re, finan­cing mecha­nisms, social accep­tance, and the risks and oppor­tu­ni­ties asso­cia­ted with the tran­si­ti­on process.

By com­bi­ning tech­ni­cal exper­ti­se, spa­ti­al plan­ning, and social sci­ence per­spec­ti­ves, M2G aims to ensu­re that future elec­tri­fi­ca­ti­on stra­te­gies are adapt­ed to the diver­se spa­ti­al, eco­no­mic, and social con­di­ti­ons in both Bra­zil and Germany.

HackY­our­Dis­trict Work­shop 2025: Open Data and Open Tools for a Net-Zero Urban Transport

Last week, we wel­co­med 35 inter­na­tio­nal par­ti­ci­pan­ts to our Mobility2Grid Rese­arch Cam­pus in Ber­lin (loca­ted on the EUREF-Cam­pus) for this year’s HackY­our­Dis­trict work­shop. The event was orga­nis­ed in coope­ra­ti­on with the Chair of Work Stu­dies, Tech­no­lo­gy and Par­ti­ci­pa­ti­on (ARTE) at Tech­ni­sche Uni­ver­si­tät Ber­lin and the TU Ber­lin Alum­ni Office.

For seve­ral years now, the HackY­our­Dis­trict series has demons­tra­ted how open data and open-source tools can unlock new per­spec­ti­ves for cli­ma­te-neu­tral mobi­li­ty and sus­tainable urban deve­lo­p­ment. The trans­for­ma­ti­on of mobi­li­ty and ener­gy sys­tems is tight­ly lin­ked to ever­y­day tra­vel rou­ti­nes, eco­no­mic struc­tures and urban envi­ron­ments. Open data and open tools – such as MAT­Sim, which we app­ly in glo­bal rese­arch pro­jects – help cities under­stand the­se com­ple­xi­ties and gene­ra­te bet­ter solutions.

Work­shops & Pro­gram High­lights 2025

DIY Sen­sors – Air Qua­li­ty & Traf­fic Coun­ting
Led by Robert Rich­ter and Alex­an­der Wendt, par­ti­ci­pan­ts built their own PM2.5 and traf­fic coun­ting sen­sors, took them home as sou­ve­nirs, and can now inte­gra­te them into their local envi­ron­ments to coll­ect data independently.

Open Data Plat­forms & AI Ana­ly­sis
In a work­shop by And­res Pinil­la Pala­ci­os, par­ti­ci­pan­ts lear­ned how sen­sor data can be aggre­ga­ted, visua­li­sed, shared and ana­ly­sed through AI-based web appli­ca­ti­ons – offe­ring a prac­ti­cal exam­p­le of data-dri­ven urban research.

Mini-Hacka­thon – AI for bar­ri­er-free side­walks
Buil­ding on results from the natio­nal Tai­wa­ne­se Hacka­thon (orga­nis­ed by Yunt­sui (Tracey) Chang, PhD and the Natio­nal Land Manage­ment Agen­cy), teams deve­lo­ped rapid ide­as for AI-based appli­ca­ti­ons to detect and remo­ve obs­ta­cles from side­walks, using YOLO4 and other open-source tools.

Mobility2Grid pres­ents its­elf at the IAA MOBI­LI­TY 2025

From Sep­tem­ber 9 to 12, 2025, Mobility2Grid will be show­ca­sing its work at the IAA MOBI­LI­TY in Munich, the world’s lea­ding plat­form for mobi­li­ty, sus­taina­bi­li­ty, and tech­no­lo­gy. As a main exhi­bi­tor in the Sum­mit area of the trade fair (Hall A2, Stand C30), the rese­arch and indus­try con­sor­ti­um will pre­sent its inno­va­tions in intel­li­gent char­ging infra­struc­tu­re and vehic­le-to-grid con­cepts. The aim is to demons­tra­te how elec­tric vehic­les can not only enable emis­si­on-free mobi­li­ty but also ser­ve as fle­xi­ble ener­gy sto­rage units that con­tri­bu­te to grid sta­bi­li­ty. In doing so, Mobility2Grid addres­ses one of the key the­mes of this year’s IAA: the clo­se inte­gra­ti­on of the ener­gy tran­si­ti­on and the mobi­li­ty transition.

Par­ti­ci­pa­ti­on in IAA MOBI­LI­TY pro­vi­des Mobility2Grid with the oppor­tu­ni­ty to pre­sent its con­cepts to an inter­na­tio­nal audi­ence of poli­cy­ma­kers, indus­try lea­ders, and rese­ar­chers, while also fos­te­ring exch­an­ge with poten­ti­al partners. With for­mats such as key­notes, mas­ter­clas­ses, and dis­cus­sion forums at the Sum­mit, along­side the open, free­ly acces­si­ble exhi­bi­ti­on spaces in down­town Munich, the event once again beco­mes a stage for inno­va­ti­on and future trends—from smart char­ging and auto­no­mous dri­ving to urban mobi­li­ty. Against this back­drop, Mobility2Grid is lever­aging the visi­bi­li­ty of IAA MOBI­LI­TY to advan­ce the dia­lo­gue on future-rea­dy ener­gy sys­tems and to under­line its role as a dri­ving force in sha­ping sus­tainable mobility.
